Read “James” with Us: A RJI Community Read Event (In Person)

Book Cover James

RJI is featuring its first novel for our community read—James by Percival Everett. The novel provides a revised account of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn from Huck’s slave sidekick, Jim, and recreates him with a new voice and a new name, James. Gone is the slave patois and James comes forth as understanding a good more than Huck in the ways of the world, especially when it comes to the wreckage that slavery prompts in a man’s life. Susan Jane—teacher, coach and strategic partner, and a previous RJI reading guide (So You Want to Talk About Race)—will once again be our moderator. No previous reading of Huckleberry Finn is required—but might be fun!

This event is sponsored by TBE’s Racial Justice Initiative, which works to increase our understanding and activism to address ongoing discrimination and inequality.
